VA Opens $112 Million Suicide Prevention Funding Opportunity for FY2027

By Shawn Cosner  |  March 17, 2026  |  Veteran News

The Department of Veterans Affairs has published its Fiscal Year 2027 Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program, making up to $112 million available to community organizations that provide suicide prevention services to veterans, service members, and their families.

The program funds community-based, primarily non-clinical services: proactive outreach to at-risk veterans, mental health screening using VA-provided tools, case management, peer support, assistance obtaining VA and other benefits, and suicide prevention financial assistance, including support for secure firearm and medication storage.

Eligible applicants include incorporated nonprofits with governing boards, community-based organizations, tribes, and state and local governments. New applicants may request up to $750,000. Applications opened April 13 and must be submitted through the VA’s electronic grants management system by 4:59 p.m. Eastern on June 12, 2026.

The VA says it prioritizes awards to areas with high rates of veteran suicide and to organizations that can reach veterans not currently receiving VA care. National data shows roughly 6 in 10 veterans who die by suicide had no recent contact with VA health care, a gap community organizations are uniquely positioned to close.

Since its 2022 launch, the program has awarded more than $200 million to 111 organizations across 46 states, U.S. territories, and tribal lands. West Virginia communities have seen almost none of that investment, a gap The Eight Fifty Committee believes this region is positioned to help close.
